Discers 4 Whiskers® filed for incorporation on 10/15/2019 and was approved by the NC Secretary of State in less than 24 hours. On 10/25/2019 we filed for 501(c)3 status with the IRS and were approved in 8 business days. We then filed for and received approval from the United States Patent Trademark Office (USPTO) to register Discers 4 Whiskers® as a trademark and received our approval in early 202o. George Sappenfield is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Discers 4 Whiskers®, Inc. Our other Board members include Roberta King Latham, Vic Robertson, Travis Dixon, Sam Hassell and our founder Jim Gilbert.
One cool evening in November 2010 after a day filled with disc golf, I was enjoying an adult beverage with a friend and we were discussing all of the good things disc golf has to offer and can do. My friend Phillip Smith said we should hold a disc golf event to help feed the critters. I immediately agreed and blurted out, yea we can call it “Discers 4 Whiskers®” and little did we know at the time the adventure that was to unfold.
We teamed up with the Triad Disc Golf Club and then held our first event on January 15th of 2011 at Johnson Street Park in High Point NC. In our first year we raised 960 pounds of pet food that we donated to the Forsyth County Humane Society for their pet food pantry. Over the next 7 years several people from the Triad Disc Golf Club helped hold Discers 4 Whiskers® events and we donated all the pet food again to the Forsyth County Humane Society.
In 2017 I noticed the event had hit a fundraising plateau so I decided to step back in and take back the reins with the goal of raising more pet food so we could help feed more critters all across the Piedmont Triad area. With a newfound and dedicated fundraising effort we were able to hold a raffle to supplement the pet food raised at the event. In 2018 we increased our donations from 1,000 pounds to over 5,000 pounds and have not looked back since. We donate donate to pet food pantries all across the Piedmont Triad NC area.
At a charity event in the summer of 2019 I met Mr. George Sappenfield who was giving a talk about the history of disc golf. George has PDGA #376 and is part of the World Disc Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2018 and we affectionately refer to George as the “Grandfather” of disc golf. After the disc golf history presentation George & I played a few holes and he asked what I did. I mentioned Discers 4 Whiskers® and George’s eyes lit up like a kid at Christmas. He said that a pet food fundraising event was a really great idea and that I should take the Discers 4 Whiskers® tournament idea more seriously and perhaps to a national level.
